With lavish harmonies, multi-instrumental talent and songs that manage to be both irresistably singalong and lyrically powerful, it's no wonder the Dixie Chicks are the biggest all-female country band in the world! The Chicks are coming to Molson Amphitheatre on Wednesday 22nd June for the second evening of their two-night-stand on their DCX MMXVI Tour!
The original Dixie Chicks were sisters Martie Erwin and Emily Erwin, plus Laura Lynch and Robin Lynn Macy. They formed in 1989 in Dallas, Texas and made their name as a bluegrass band until 1995, when Lynch left and Macy was replaced by Natalie Maines. With Maines on board, their music and style took a more commercial turn – veering away from the traditional bluegrass sensibilities and towards something rockier. They also veered away from country-and-western's conservative politics, prompting extreme reactions from fans including boycotts of their work and shows, and in some cases even death threats. Though this took its toll on record sales for a while, the band bounced back, going on to win 13 Grammy Awards, including five in 2007 for Taking the Long Way – which received the Grammy Award for Album of the Year – and "Not Ready to Make Nice", a single from that album.
